How to Download Instagram Reels on PC or Mac
On a computer the link is already sitting in your address bar. Here is how to turn it into an MP4 in your Downloads folder, and why right-click doesn't work.
The short version
- Open the reel on instagram.com and copy the address from the browser's address bar.
- Open the downloader in another tab and paste the link with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac).
- Press Download, then Save under the preview.
- The file lands in your Downloads folder as
Instagram_<post-id>_1.mp4.
Why right-click "Save video as" doesn't work
On instagram.com, right-clicking a reel gives you nothing useful to save. The player does not point at one video file; it streams the reel in small pieces, so there is no single file behind the video for your browser to save. The downloader asks for the finished MP4 that Instagram publishes for the post and hands you that instead.
Getting the link on a computer
You rarely need the share menu on desktop. Any of these gives you a working link:
- The address bar. Open a reel or post and the URL changes to
instagram.com/reel/…orinstagram.com/p/…. Copy that. - From a profile grid. Clicking a post on someone's profile opens it in an overlay, and the address bar switches to that post's link even though the profile is still visible behind it.
- The ••• menu. Every post has a Copy link option in its three-dot menu.
Tracking parameters on the end, like ?igsh= or ?utm_source=, are ignored, so there's no need to trim them off.
The Paste button and your clipboard: some browsers ask permission before a page can read the clipboard. Allow it, or skip the button and press Ctrl+V or Cmd+V in the box. Both do the same thing.
Where the file goes

The MP4 plays in any standard player: Media Player on Windows, QuickTime on a Mac, or VLC on either. Photos come back as ordinary JPG files and carousels list each slide with its own Save button.
Saving a lot of reels? Use a spreadsheet

Common problems

| "Not a valid Instagram post/reel/photo URL" | The link is a profile or the Instagram home page. Open the post itself and copy again. |
| "Could not extract media" | The post is private, deleted, or a Story. Only public posts work. |
